Mistress K Reviews: Familiar webcomic - a BDSM, kinky, magick story with heart

Happy Solstice and welcome back for the third edition of Mistress K Reviews!

The first Review was a clip of the beautiful Adreena Angela and Ava Austen - did you miss out on it? You poor unfortunate soul, go back and find it. Go on, I’ll wait - not that I think you’ll last long if you watch that clip, mercy me….The second was my review of the extremely hot content that Goddess Serena is providing through her OnlyFans account.

On one late balmy evening, we were discussing our plans for content for all you wonderful patrons of our chastity services. Slave D knelt on the floor, massaging my feet thoroughly as I lounged against our leather sofa, surrounded by cushions like some indulgent Roman empress. Alas, there were no palm fronds or oiled beauties feeding me grapes although that wouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility for another indulgent Saturday…anyway I digress.

As he attended to my feet, we discussed what else we, two perverts with a love for chastity, could bring to the internet. What inspires us, what turns us on, how can we use our platform to help you fine folk discover new and exciting things?

So as I began to list lots of sex-positive pieces of literature I was reading, the porn I was making Slave D watch, the sex toys that we both enjoyed, we realised that we contain multitudes. Multitudes of smut and filth and sultry experiences that we should share with you all. And whilst I keep Slave D working hard (and not getting hard) during Covid-19, it falls to me - your benevolent Mistress K to watch and read and review (and wank) for you. A hardship indeed, send condolences to my right hand and our electricity bill.

Thus begins our Mistress K Reviews segment of our blog. BDSM comics, excellent porn, fine purveyors of sex toys, lingerie and latex - all shall be examined under my watchful eye and you eager gang of degenerates will be privileged enough to receive these thoughts.

Familiar - The BDSM webcomic

For today’s review, I’m going to regale you all about this magnificent web-comic called “Familiar” that I’ve been thoroughly enjoying.

Manhattan 2019. Magick is real and witches run publishing companies.

Disclaimer

Let’s start with the old disclaimers, shall we? House of Denial does have an existing relationship with Soushiyo - you’ll recognise his stunning art from Slave D’s 3-part chastity/femdom story. Haven’t read this hot-as-fuck story or seen Soushiyo’s art? Go and treat yourself here, and then here and then finish yourself off here.

I encountered his artwork through Twitter by divine chance - an associate retweeted a piece of his fanart and I spent the rest of the evening in a Twitter spiral, eagerly consuming everything that he had posted so far. Something that struck me was the sheer celebration of diverse people and sexualities represented in his artwork - particularly positive female-centric images, focusing on pleasure. How marvellous! How divine! How utterly me!

Then I came across his Tumblr (mostly defunct since the great Porn Purge of 2018) and saw male chastity images and that was it. I showed Slave D and said how I felt it was necessary, nae imperative that we commissioned some art for our side. You just know when someone “gets it.”

Since we established contact with Soushiyo, we’ve been in regular contact with him and we do also partially sponsor Familiar. This is a relatively new development through our working relationship but this review has been in development for….longer than I would like to admit.

Our sponsorship of Familiar is because we at the House of Denial really do genuinely believe it is Good Content and want to support these things online. This review has been written entirely by me and contains my honest thoughts and opinions. The review has not been paid for by Soushiyo and no goods have been exchanged for this review.

For transparency, here is evidence on the site of our sponsorship:

So what exactly is Familiar about?

Familiar is a “smutty webcomic with heart”, as writer and artist Soushiyo describes. The premise, as per the initial image listed above in this review, is that the hard-working Diana is consumed by her work within the publishing industry and forgets that she’s an important figure in her own life. During editing a book regarding familiars (supernatural entities that support a witch), she accidentally summons Jack, a cat familiar whose focus is to untangle Diana from her work-web through domination and to work on tying her up in entirely different ways.

Sounds good, hit me with some background...

Familiar was released to the Internet on 21st September 2019, but several of the chapters had already been available in the preceding weeks to this if you were a Patreon, which I was. Currently there are 8 chapters publicly released, which is over 100+ pages to read - perfect if you’re in the mood to binge content.

When I started reading Familiar, one of the first things I loved was how much thought had gone into it before any readers had seen it. The chapters have release dates - the upcoming chapter is Chapter 7: Centre which is due for release on June 23rd to Advanced Release patreon supporters and then public release a week later on June 30th. A chapter is released every 2 months or so, with the release dates published on the website.

With that care and thought for the comic - there is also a content warning page which hyperlinks you to the specific chapter, provides a brief summary and contains chapter-related content warnings. So far, the content warnings are sex-related and regarding D/s power dynamics so if there are things that do or do not float your boat or inflate your life raft, then you can miss out on that chapter.

This content page actually made me think a lot about the nature of porn and how we approach it as a viewer/reader. There has been many a time where Slave D or I are really getting into some porn and then something that we’re not into occurs on screen and WHAM, arousal gone, the hot-toe-tingling feeling has dissipated and erections flag. It’s immensely frustrating so having warnings or indicators before a chapter or a video actually would be so much easier to ensure consistent levels of enjoyments in your smut life. Better tagging systems, please and thank you.

Now you’re off your porn-consumption soapbox, tell me more about the porn!

Ah the porn! Folx, the porn is hot indeed. And since we’re discussing a visual medium, let me demonstrate this by including a steamy image below.

A naked man and woman having sex in doggy-style position. He is kissing her shoulder blades, her head is turned towards the viewer and her expression is one of pleasure

Point firmly made, I think….

What I like about Familiar is the joy with which kink and sex is approached - this will become a recurring themes in my reviews, fair warning. Whilst the relationship between Jack and Diana is male dom, female submissive, the kink relationship never defaults towards “stereotypical” tropes for that dynamic. There’s been no humiliation within the dynamic and the intent of the sex scenes has been pleasure or to reinforce positive learning strategies (that may sound strange but Chapter 3: Interview will clear that right up for you!)

Familiar seeks to show us this relationship where positive change can be brought about through domination, and how mutually beneficial a healthy D/s relationship can be. Soushiyo calls it “wholesome kink”. I’ve found this surge in wholesome/joyful kink through porn and art and media absolutely invigorating. This does not negate that I love nasty, dirty, filthy talk-and-cum-everywhere porn but after a while, it’s nice to have something else to stimulate the grey matter and not just the flesh. Familiar provides that and I cannot wait to see where the story takes us. (I know parts of it and I cannot WAIT to see how it’s all explored, we’re in for a treat folxs!!)

Wait, is this another straight BDSM comic?

Oh my sweet child, no. If the points above haven’t convinced you that Familiar is worth checking out, I am concerned for you but to further allay your concerns, Soushiyo is a queer POC creator and the characters of Familiar very much embody that intersectional identity life.

If you’ve made the excellent life decision to follow Soushiyo on Twitter, you’ll have seen a whole multitude of images from Familiar, probably without even realising. Last year from Pride month, he produced this image of three quarters of the main cast of the comic, representing their respective sexual orientations.

An illustrated image of 3 people, with "Happy Pride" written on it. The women in the foreground are dressed in lesbian pride and bisexual pride colours. The male in the background is wearing a shirt with the pansexual flag on the sleeve. They are smiling at an imaginary camera

We’ve seen previews of Jack dominating Freddi and Diana, as per the below image from the website….Tattooed men, hot blondes with gags in their mouth, matching sub restraints, receiving oral pleasure - all the makings of an excellent evening in my book, wouldn't you agree?

An illustrated image of three people having a mfm threesome. The left figure is reclined, fully dressed and is receiving a blow job from a naked female wearing leather cuffs and collars. The woman is being penetrated by a collared, cuffed and gagged blonde tattooed man behind her.

And of Rosemary with two extremely satisfied submissives. There’s so much I love about this image. The soft hazy light glow, the contentment on all their faces, Freddi and Diana both wearing stockings. I also adore that Rosemary’s ‘Domme wear” is not the traditional “high latex” look - it looks functional and comfortable and powerful. I love a Domme in lingerie though, I can’t deny my own heart!

An illustration of a warmly lit room, with three people arranged on a teal sofa. The central figure is a black woman, wearing lingerie and tenderly holding the face and breast of the submissives leaning into her. The male is blonde, his eyes are closed in contentment and he is naked except for a black thigh high stockings. The female is sitting on the floor, reclined against the domme's leg, naked except for black thigh high stockings and chest harness.

Has that convinced you that this is the content that you’ve been missing in your life?

Boy has it! This Soushiyo sounds like a swell guy, links please and thank you.

Why of course! Here is the obligatory section of collected relevant links, please go forth and enjoy Familiar, the many other kinky artworks of Soushiyo (this is a real treat), support Soushiyo on Patreon.
